This is the fourth book in the series following the transport companies & contractors who paved the way in the last frontier that is the West Coast. The Haast Pass road was only opened up to traffic in the late sixties, connecting the coast with Central Otago in the south. To the north was the winding Buller Gorge to connect with Nelson & the steep hills of the Hope saddle & Spooners range.
To the East the only two roads out both had to traverse the Southern Alps, over the very steep & limited access Arthurs Pass plus the longer Lewis Pass to the North. Either way out of this area was slow & tough going for the operators of the day.
This book is dedicated to these hard working men & their families.
