On the 4th of January 1958 Sir Edmund Hillary, Derek Wright & Murray Ellis reached the South Pole. They were the first to do so overland since Scott in 1912, and the first to do it by Tractor. Affectionately christened "Sue", this TEA-20 was the lead vehicle. Equipped with special rubber tracks, they were steered by brakes on the rear axle. They were painted red to make them more visible in the snow, & were all given female names (to compensate for the lack of female company on the expedition).
Sue was eventually returned to Coventry in 1965, & is now on display at the Massey Ferguson Technology Centre in Beauvais, France.
